Wildland firefighters battle runaway fires

South Africa's northern veld and forest fire season started in earnest this week with major blazes reported in the Free State near Clarens and in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands.
 
Late today (Wednesday, July 21) two Working on Fire teams of 22 wildland firefighters each were on their way to the Clarens region supported by a WoF firefighting helicopter dispatched from Vryheid.
 
There has been no reported loss of life but some farm animals have been burned.
 
Some plantation fires were also reported in Mpumalanga and Limpopo but were quickly contained from the air.
 
Michelle Kleinhans, the Working on Fire Programme's national co-ordinator, said humidity levels had dropped making conditions cold and dry, creating ideal conditions for veld fires.
 
WoF wildland firefighters have responded to 180 fires across the country since May and this figure is expected to grow in coming days.
 
"Nearly 60% of all wild fires are ignited from community environments ," she said, "this means people are losing control of cooking fires, children are making fires while they are waiting for school to start and there is some irresponsible agricultural burning."
 
WoF is a government-funded, multi-partner organisation focused on Integrated Fire Management and veld and wild firefighting. It employs 2 500 veld and forest fire fighters from disadvantaged rural communities who are trained as front line wildland firefighters.. Uncontrolled wildland fires cost the South African economy billions of rands every year.
 
Kleinhans said all WoF teams were on stand-by to assist partner organisations should they need manpower to control fires.
 
"The SANDF has an helicopter on stand-by in the Free State should they be required to fight the fires currently burning in the Clarens and  Fouriesberg area.
 
Jackson Mabuza, WoF's regional manager for the Mpumalanga Highlands, said careless rural children were a major cause of veld and forest fires because they used fire to keep warm and light their way in the cold winter months.
 
"Around here (Dullstroom, Belfast) children heat rocks and wrap them in newspaper to take to take to school. Often the paper catches fire, they drop it and run away, with the burning paper left to ignite a veld fire."
 
Bongani Nhlabathi, regional manager in the Lowveld, said WoF's Firewise programme, which was aimed at teaching fire awareness to children, was being introduced to schools in the province.
 
The northern fire season traditionally coincides with the cold dry winter months between June and October.



Wild firefighters join hands across continents

Court Ruling puts Firefighting Helicopters back in the Air

Well-earned rest for wildland firefighters
