THE popular Basotho Cultural Village rest camp in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park was gutted by fire in the early hours of yesterday morning. At least nine of the 24 units were destroyed.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Park manager Johan Taljaard said the fire seems to have begun between 2 am and 3 am, apparently among the units on the left side of the camp between the road and the reception area.
He said the camp, which has been fully booked for the upcoming September 24 holiday, will be closed until further notice, and the people with bookings will be contacted to make alternative arrangements.
The unaffected parts of the village such as the museum will still be operational.
Meanwhile, the operations manager of Working on Fire, Simon Thomas, yesterday warn-ed that although no new fires had been reported, the province is still in serious danger of fires, albeit the danger will be lower, at green level today, because cloudy, cool weather with some rain is expected.
