Transport
Transporting crews and equipment to wild fires requires a reliable and efficient fleet of vehicles, drivers and maintenance crew. These vehicles are used in emergencies, for training, camps and in every day operations like prescribed burning, clearing vegetation and for community education activities.
Working on Fire's range of fire fighting and transport vehicles are of international standard and custom made to meet the programme's specific requirements.
The Fleet
37 Samil 50 4x4 fire trucks,
6 HSV Mitsubishi Fuso 4x4 fuel bowsers, each with a carrying capacity of approximately 2 500 litres,
1 HSV Samil 50 fuel bowzer with 5 000L capacity
5 Volare 22seater busses

1 Samil 100 fire fighting tanker 20 000L capacity for IFMS
2 Mitsubishi fuso 4x4 strike units for IFMS
2 Isuzu 4x4 strike units for IFMS
4 Tata 4x4 strike units for IFMS
11 4x4 double cab bakkies for IFMS
19 2.5 ton trailers for transporting the crews equipment with the busses
Apart from fuel, water and fire fighters, the vehicles are equipped with hand tools and equipment such as drinking water for crews, hoses, fire beaters, knapsacks, rakes, hoes, small and large axes, bow-saws, spades, basic tools, hand-held radios and emergency lighting. The trucks have storage facilities for crew rations and equipment which has to be ready and on standby for a call-out. The fleet is maintained by qualified private commercial companies in each province which are contracted to Working on Fire to carry out repairs, routine mechanical checks and services.
The Drivers
Working on Fire employs 60 qualified drivers with C1 or EC type licences. Drivers complete their induction training, which includes advanced driving courses and safety drills, at the Nelspruit Academy. Drivers' abilities are regularly assessed to ensure they are ready for any emergency. They need to be able to drive in dangerous situations and over rough terrain, staying calm in a frightening fire situation.
