Warburton Heroes - Working On The Border Between Swaziland And South Africa    by Thulani Simelane, posted Wed, 31st March '10

Our team has done it again. Assist along the border for the first time in history. Warburton Heroes’ went to Waverly Border of South Africa and Swaziland on from the 1st to the 5th March 2010. We have started community work alongside the border, spraying herbicide for tracer line and belt burning to prevent fires from spreading from South Africa to Swaziland or from Swaziland to South Africa.

The area was uphill and downhill and the team had to work through rough terrain.  Water had to be carried with us.  Our crew leaders and team had an excellent week and good performance.

I, Thulani, would like to thank Mr. Nico  Steinberg – FPA Manager and Tertia Rautenbach, Base Manager for their hard work to make this fruitful, a lot of planning has been done for assistance and community work in our area. I hope this will grow and gain prosperity in future for Working on Fire and the FPA.  In a couple of weeks from now we will start burning the fire breaks. The communities along the border will benefit from this hard work, because they are in a high fire prone area. We have also done awareness’ at 5 schools:  Njomane Primary, Grootboom, The Brook, Chibikhulu Primary School. We also went to assist our adopted School, cleaning their play grounds. Base manager Tertia and Thulani also went to talk at Mayflower during a LandCare Day on the 10th March 2010.  Telling the community about fires,

Working on Fire and the FPA: On the 18th March the team went and did community work in Warburton, cleaning the area.
In our spare time we are busy with recycling and doing arts & crafts.

We are going to give the other teams a hard time because our aim is the first place at the Fire camp.
Mr. Douglas and Mr. Jackson visited our base on the morning of the 18th March, to present us with the trophy for best base audit.  We enjoyed the meal and drinks they provided and we as a team would like to thank Mr. Douglas and Mr. Jackson for sponsoring Warburton Heroes’.
