Bases
Working on Fire has 107 fire fighting bases in fire-prone areas across the country. These bases have a strong working relationship with a range of local partners such as Cape Nature and SANParks. Each base, under the direction of a base manager, is manned by a team of between 10 and 25 people, called a hotshot crew. These hand crews use mainly hand tools to fight fires, but can call on aerial support should the fire danger escalate.
Each base is in radio communication with a Local Dispatch Centre. This is turn is linked to Provincial Co-ordinating Centres and a National Co-ordinating Centre (Incident Command Centre) which co-ordinates WoFs resources, needs and actions. This is vital for efficient, effective, and safe fire-related operations.
